Rugs are not small carpets, and that's why they get damaged
A fitted carpet is a known quantity: machine-made, fixed down, on underlay, usually one fibre. A rug can be anything. It may be hand-knotted wool with unstable natural dyes, a viscose blend that turns yellow and crunchy the moment it is over-wet, a machine-made shaggy with a latex backing, or a flatweave with a fringe that has to be handled separately. Treating all of those the same way is how expensive rugs get ruined.
Our approach is assessment first. We identify what the rug is made from, look at its construction and backing, check the fringe, test for dye stability in a hidden area and look at what the rug has already been through; previous DIY cleaning is one of the most common complications we find. Only then do we choose the method and tell you what result to expect.

Why professional help matters
Viscose and viscose blends are sold everywhere as 'art silk' and look wonderful in the shop. They are also the single most moisture-sensitive floor covering in most homes; get them wet in the wrong way and the pile yellows, stiffens and mats permanently.
Wool has its own rules: it dislikes high alkalinity and aggressive heat, natural dyes can bleed if the wrong chemistry is used, and fringes need separate handling. Identifying the rug before cleaning it is the entire difference between a good result and an unrecoverable one.
What Happens If You Leave It
The damage usually happens before we're called
Most ruined rugs we see were not ruined by dirt. They were ruined by a hired machine, a supermarket spray or a well-meant scrub with a wet cloth, and once a viscose pile has yellowed or a natural dye has bled, no cleaner can undo it.
Over-wetting causes permanent texture change
Viscose in particular loses its sheen and turns brittle and matted when it is soaked. The pile can feel like straw afterwards, and that change does not reverse.
Dyes bleed into each other
Unstable natural dyes migrate when they are wet for too long or cleaned at the wrong pH. A red border bleeding into a cream field is one of the most common irreversible faults in a hand-made rug.
Backings and fringes fail
Latex backings on machine-made rugs break down when repeatedly soaked, shedding a fine dust and causing the rug to ripple. Fringes yellow, rot or knot if they aren't handled separately.
Grit wears the knots down
A rug sitting in a walkway collects grit that grinds against the base of the pile. Left in place it thins the pile unevenly, and the wear pattern becomes permanent.
Odour spreads underneath
A pet accident passes through the rug to the floor or carpet below. Cleaning only the top face leaves the smell in the floor and the rug re-absorbs it.

Matched cleaning
The rug is cleaned using the approach its fibre and construction can take, with pre-treatment on specific areas, controlled moisture, and separate handling for fringes where present.
Extraction, grooming and controlled drying
Solution and soil are extracted back out, the pile is groomed in the right direction, and the rug is set up to dry properly rather than left damp on a floor.

How much does rug cleaning cost?

Can you clean my rug in my home?
Most rugs are cleaned in place, which keeps the job to a single visit and usually happens alongside carpets or upholstery. At inspection we'll tell you if a particular rug shouldn't be wet-cleaned in situ and what the alternative is.
How long does it take, and how long to dry?
The cleaning itself is usually part of a single visit. Drying depends heavily on fibre, pile depth, ventilation and the weather, shaggy and wool rugs take longer than flat machine-made ones, and we'll give you a realistic expectation on the day rather than a made-up number.
Can you clean viscose or 'art silk' rugs?
We assess them individually. Viscose is the most moisture-sensitive material in most homes and can yellow or stiffen permanently if it's wet-cleaned carelessly. We identify the fibre and test first, and if a wet clean isn't safe we'll tell you straight rather than risk your rug.
Will the colours run?
That's what dye testing before cleaning is for. If colours show instability we change the method or advise against cleaning altogether. Bleeding dyes are almost always the result of skipping this step.
Can you remove pet urine from a rug?
Often we can improve it significantly, and sometimes remove it entirely; it depends how deep it has gone and how long it has been there. Where urine has passed through to the floor or carpet below, that has to be treated too, otherwise the smell comes back.
How long should a rug last, and how often should it be cleaned?
A well-maintained wool rug can last decades; a neglected one in a walkway can look finished in a few years. Frequency depends on traffic, pets and children: the practical signal is a visible path or a rug that no longer feels clean underfoot.
